X-ray Toronto provides high quality medical imaging services including radiographs, ultrasound, bone mineral density and other procedures. All imaging exams are performed by trained and certified technologists. All staff are courteous, helpful and always more than happy to answer your questions or concerns.
Diagnostic X-Rays
Diagnostic x-rays (also known as radiographs) are the most common type of diagnostic medical x-ray and are used to evaluate bones, joints, organs, and lung disease. They are safe, quick and painless. They can detect fractures, calcifications and tumors. They also help to detect pneumonia, some types of injuries and dental problems.
General diagnostic x-rays may be ordered by your doctor to look for conditions in the chest, bones, sinuses, skull and spine. They can also be used to assess breathing and heart function in patients with asthma or COPD, as well as to identify lung cancer.
The x-rays are generated using invisible beams of radiation that travel through the body, based on the density of different tissues. Bony structures, such as bones and the lungs, absorb more radiation than less dense tissues, such as muscle or fat. Therefore, they appear white on the developed image of an x-ray.
There are two types of x-rays: low-energy and high-energy x-rays. Lower energy X-ray Toronto produce less radiation than higher energy x-rays and can be safer for patients with a family history of cancer or other health concerns.
X-rays of the breast are called mammograms and are often used for early cancer detection, especially in women who have no symptoms or have been diagnosed with breast disease. They can detect tumors or other abnormal masses and even small bits of calcium that might indicate cancer.
Mammography is a low-dose form of x-ray examination that can be done as early as age 35, when cancer can be more easily detected. Tumors appear as regular or irregular-shaped masses that are somewhat brighter than the background on the radiograph. They can also be spotted by the presence of tiny bits of calcium that are very bright on a mammogram.
Chest X-Rays
Approximately half of all x-rays taken in medical institutions are chest x-rays, which can be used to detect pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancer and other diseases. They are often performed prior to surgery or during immigration.
Computed tomography, or CT, is a special type of x-ray that generates detailed three-dimensional images of the body. They are more sensitive than traditional x-rays and allow doctors to view structures from multiple angles.
Bone Mineral Density, or BMD, is an x-ray test that measures the mineral content and density of the bones to determine if a person has osteoporosis, or if they are at risk of developing fractures (breaks in the bones). It can also be used to monitor bone loss after cancer treatment.
